about

In honor of our friend and vocalist Jay Allen’s 60th birthday, this beloved punk ode to a faulty countertop appliance, penned by Evan “Muck” Shore, is now available for all to enjoy!

WHO KNEW? The classic punk song about appliance love-gone-wrong was recorded 34 years ago in a gritty Boston studio by four young friends and surf-punk enthusiasts. Singer Jay Allen describes the song’s inception:

"The true story is that Evan and I were hanging out and making fun of arty new wave songs with dumb subjects. He grabbed a guitar and started playing the riff, and blurted out, “Toaster Oven!” and me on a Beatles kick, added, “I gave you all my loving,” and then singing the glories of desirable kitchen appliances almost wrote itself. Only a bit later a feeling of angst and despair set in. The seeds of distrust were sown, when in a true moment of need, that reliable friend burnt the toast. Hearts were broken, souls were crushed, maybe to never recover. And that’s how a legend was born, a legend that wouldn’t make it past breakfast."

Whether you prefer English muffins, pop tarts, or bagels, you're going to love this rather silly spring single from Boston's punk heyday. With a killer bass hook, catchy chorus and sing-a-long “oooohs,” this song is provides the melodic means to survive kitchen heartbreak.

lyrics

Toaster oven
I gave you all my loving
Toaster oven
You make my English muffin
Toaster oven
You're always cooking something
Toaster oven
You cost me next to nothing

But when I need you most
You went and burnt my toast

Toaster oven
You saved me lots of suffering
Toaster oven
Something to bake my stuff in

But when I need you most
You went and burnt my toast

Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven

Toaster oven
You burned my English muffin
Toaster oven
You caused me lots of suffering
Toaster oven
Now I ain't bluffing
I smashed by toaster oven
Now it's worth next to nothing

Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
Toaster oven
